Jam is for girls girls get jam
launches at the watershed bristol
Jam Is For Girls Girls Get Jam launched at the Watershed in November 2017 to mark International End Violence Against Women's Day.
It was an wonderful evening of poetry readings and a discussion panel with members of UWE, Intergrate UK and Safe Space in aid of International Ending Violence Against Women Day (25 Nov).
These organisations are doing incredible work to make a change in how women access support services, how government policy can better provide for vulnerable women and girls, and how we need to change societal attitudes towards women.

I owe a huge thank you to Michal Nahman, UWE, Adibah Iqbal, Safe Space, Rania Ibrahim & Lisa Zimmerman, Integrate UK for their contributions and sharing their stories and strengnth.
‘Shagufta tells vivid stories with a fearlessness that is both compelling and contagious.’ - VANESSA KISUULE
‘A book of raging beauty, of political purpose and stories that tie us to our humanity. It’s the kind of book I love, resplendent with dark, uncompromising imagery, and metaphors. An impressive debut.’ - JOELLE TAYLOR

Lastly, I would like to thank everyone who made this journey with me.
This book is dedicated to all the women in my family, past, present and future. It is dedicated to the strength and wisdom of my mother and my sisters. It is dedicated to the memory of my grandmothers and great-grandmothers. I write for my daughter, who faces the world with a courage so divine, so life-affirming that I am inspired every day by her. I write for my son, who encompasses both the masculine and the feminine in an unashamedly sensitive and emotionally intelligent way. I am proud and honoured to be their mother. And I would like to thank Imran for his support and for always believing on my work.
My poetic journey could not have taken the path it has, if it were not for the encouragement and support of the Bristol Black Writers, Edson Burton, Bertel Martin, Glenn Carmichael, Lucy English, Annie McGann, Sharon Clarke, Kate Offord, Gina Sherman, Lucy Lepchani, Rebecca Tantony, Elizabeth K Mizon, Amani Z Saeed, Shareefa Energy, Afshan Lodhi, Shruti Chauhan, Anjali Barot, Naylah Ahmed, Tanuja Amarasuriya, Zeba Talkani, Helen Mott, Michal Nahman, Sian Norris, and the many people who have given me the platforms and opportunities to keep at the writing game.
I would like to thank my publisher Burning Eye Books, Clive Birnie, Jenn Hart, Liv Torc, and Harriet Evans, who have made this poet’s dream come true. Finally, a special mention to the amazing artist that is Angela Aujla, who created the cover art.
